September 1st always sneaks up on me.
Nothing actually changes on the calendar — it's still 88 degrees, the pool is still open, the cicadas didn't get the memo.
But something shifts. School's in. Fall ball starts. Somebody in your neighborhood already put a pumpkin on their porch, and honestly, good for them.
Here's what I kept thinking about while I built this issue: this is the last real weekend of summer. Labor Day is Monday. The county pools close for the season the day after. And then it's football, festivals, and the long slide into the holidays.
So I did something a little different this week. Instead of one long list you have to sort through yourself, I broke the whole week down by who you're actually with.
Going solo? There's a section. Got the grandkids? There's a section. Need a night without kids? Got you. Trying to spend nothing? That one's the longest.
Find your person. Find your thing. Go do it before the summer's gone.

An hour of slow, controlled movement in a room with people your own age. All levels welcome — and I mean genuinely all levels, including "I have never done this and I'm not sure I want anyone watching."
Why I'd send you here: if you've been told to "move more" and every option so far has been either a gym or a walking trail in 90-degree heat, this is the one. It's indoors, it's an hour, and nobody's competing.

Two things happen back to back at the county's senior center in Lawrenceville that day:
Sit & Stitch, 10:00 AM–1:00 PM — knitting, crochet, whatever you're working on
Mahjong, 1:00–4:00 PM — same room, same afternoon
Why I'd send you here: because you can walk in at 10 and leave at 4 having talked to actual humans all day, and it costs you nothing. That's not a small thing. Call th park or sho up in person, registration not enabled online.
(Also that week at Bethesda: Seasoned Gents, the men's social group, meets Tuesday, September 1, 10:00 AM–12:00 PM.)

Dad's Garage Comedy Night at the Eagle Theatre

The Eagle Theatre, 5029 W Broad St, Sugar Hill, GA 30518
Dad's Garage is Atlanta's long-running improv company, and their whole thing is that nothing is written down. The audience throws out a suggestion, and five people build a scene out of it in real time. Sometimes it's brilliant. Sometimes it falls apart. Watching it fall apart is half the reason to go.
This is not the family show. Leave the kids at home and go be a person for a night.
Why I'd send you here: because "dinner and a movie" has been the default date for forty years and it is fine, and this is the opposite of fine. You will laugh at something you can't explain to anyone the next day.

Flicks on the Green: The Mighty Ducks — FREE

The city's outdoor movie series, and this is the September one. The Mighty Ducks is PG, it's an hour and 44 minutes, and it holds up better than most of what your kids are watching on a tablet right now.
Bring blankets. Bring low chairs. Bring more snacks than you think you need, because you will be wrong.
Why I'd send you here: it's free, it's outside, and it's the kind of night a seven-year-old files away permanently. My kids remember exactly zero of the expensive things we've done and all of the ones where they got to lie on a blanket in the dark.

All levels, outdoors, barefoot on the grass. Bring a mat, water, and a towel. It runs again the following Tuesday if this week gets away from you.
Why I'd send you here: an hour of free, city-run yoga at 8 AM on a Tuesday is the single easiest "I did something good for myself" win available in this county.

Why I'd send you here: it's five dollars for two hours of something to do, and the money goes to animals. That math works in any economy.

Late-afternoon market, so you can go after work instead of setting an alarm on Saturday. Produce, makers, the usual good stuff.
Date Night — Nothing Fancy
You asked for date night. You did not ask for a tasting menu. Here's dinner and a show for two people who mostly want to sit down.
1. Dinner — The Tavern at Sugar Hill

Wings, burgers, pizza, fried pickles, tater tots. That's the whole personality and it's the right one. Open until 11 PM every night of the week, which matters when you're the couple who doesn't decide on dinner until 8:15.
Get the Honey Sriracha Wings. Split the fries and the tots — don't make it a whole decision.
Why I'd send you here: because "nothing fancy" is a real request and most date-night lists ignore it completely. Nobody is judging your shoes here.
2. Live music — Summer Sounds at Slow Pour

Desperate Measures is playing the taproom Saturday night. Downtown Lawrenceville on a Saturday means you can park once, eat somewhere on the square, and walk over.
Why I'd send you here: live music you didn't buy tickets for hits different. If it's great, you stay. If it's not, you leave, and you're out nothing.
The Big One: Fireworks at the Ballpark
Gwinnett Stripers vs. Charlotte Knights

Parking: $9 per car on gamedays
First thing you should know: the ballpark has a new name. It's Gwinnett Field now. Same place, same seats, same overpriced-but-worth-it ballpark nachos — new sign out front. If you say "Coolray" out of habit this weekend, everyone will still know what you mean.
Second thing: Friday home games get post-game fireworks, and this is the last one before the season starts winding down. The City of Sugar Hill is also running its community night at this game — it's the rain-out makeup from earlier in the summer.
Why I'd send you here: minor league baseball is the most underrated family night in Gwinnett and it isn't close. Nobody cares if your four-year-old watches nine innings or zero. You get a cheap seat, a hot dog, and fireworks over the outfield, and the whole thing wraps up by 10.

Labor Day is Monday, September 7. Here's everything that changes, in one place. Screenshot this one.
🏊 The pools close for the season — and Labor Day is the last day.
Gwinnett's outdoor leisure pools run special hours on Monday, September 7: noon–6:00 PM. Then every county aquatic center shuts down September 8–13 for annual maintenance.
That includes Rhodes Jordan Park Pool (100 East Crogan Street, Lawrenceville), Lenora Park Pool (4315 Lenora Church Road, Snellville), and West Gwinnett Park Aquatic Center (4488 Peachtree Industrial Blvd, Berkeley Lake).

Every year around this time I catch myself doing the thing where I mourn a season while it's still happening. Summer's not over. It's Tuesday. There are five more days of it and a holiday Monday tacked on the end.
So here's my ask, and it's small: pick one thing off this list and actually put it on the calendar. Not "we should do that sometime." A day. A time. Tell somebody you're going.
That's the whole difference between a week you remember and a week that just kind of happened to you.
Go get in the pool one more time. Watch the fireworks. Let the kids stay up too late on a blanket in the grass at Peachtree Corners.
