Hey neighbor,

I had a doctor's appointment in Sugar Hill this week — nothing exciting, just one of those things on the calendar. But afterward I wandered down into downtown Sugar Hill with my camera to grab some photos and videos for the newsletter… and I genuinely lost track of time.

Instagram post

I don't know if it was the light, or the way the whole downtown is built to make you slow down and just be there — but I stood in the middle of it all, just remembered how beautiful the place that we live in is. The kind of place people drive hours to visit on a weekend, and we get to call it Tuesday.

The Bowl at Sugar Hill

That little moment is exactly why I do this. So this week I'm giving Sugar Hill a well-deserved spotlight — and pointing you toward a whole weekend of things happening across our county, from fireflies at sunset to the World Cup playing out right in our backyard.

Before we dive in — I want to hear from you. 👇

Quick ask before we start: Send me your summer picks!

We're deep into summer, and I want to build a reader-powered list. Hit reply and tell me your top pick so far — the park you keep going back to, the restaurant you can't stop talking about, the spot that's made your Gwinnett summer. I'll feature the best ones in an upcoming issue. (Yes, I read every single reply.)

Gus' Hidden Gem: Sugar Hill Spotlight

Every week I find one place in Gwinnett that deserves more love. This week — fittingly — it's in the city that started this whole issue: Rushing Trading Co. in downtown Sugar Hill.

If you've never been, picture a mother-daughter team (Mattie & Amber) who started with a little coffee cart and turned it into one of the warmest coffee-and-brunch spots in the county. It's right on West Broad Street (5029 W Broad St NE), steps from everything that made me stop and stare this week. Come for the coffee, stay for brunch, and just let downtown Sugar Hill do its thing around you. → rushingtradingco.com

What to do: Grab a coffee, then walk it off through downtown. That's the exact loop that reminded me how good we have it. Hours: Mon–Fri 8a–2p, Sat 8a–3p, Sun 9a–3p.

Date Night: Two New(er) Spots Worth the Drive

No steakhouses this week — just two flavorful, lively spots perfect for a night out:

Dosti Indian Tap & Grill — Suwanee (3651 Peachtree Pkwy). Bold North-and-South Indian flavors, a full bar, and craft cocktails in a lively dine-in setting. Order the handmade naan and let the table get loud. → dostitapandgrill.com

La Pura Vida Tacos & Tequila — Duluth (1650 Pleasant Hill Rd). Vibrant Latin energy, fresh tacos, and a tequila list made for lingering. Open late Fri & Sat ('til 1am) if your date night runs long. → lapuravidatacostequila.com

Two Parks to Walk This Week

You don't have to leave the county to feel like you got away. Two favorites — one for the hikers, one for the easy strollers:

Little Mulberry Park — Auburn (3855 Fence Rd). This is your hike. 15 miles of trails through woods and along the water, plus an overlook at one of the highest points in all of Gwinnett. Go early, catch the morning light, earn the view. 📍 Open in Google Maps

McDaniel Farm Park — Duluth (3251 McDaniel Rd). This is your evening walk. Three miles of shaded, paved paths winding past creeks and meadows, bench swings scattered along the way, and a restored 1930s farm. Come at golden hour — it's the kind of slow, easy loop that resets your whole week. 📍 Open in Google Maps

👵 Seniors, save this number: Gwinnett County Senior Services — 678.377.4150. It's the county's free Information & Assistance line for anyone 60+ (or a spouse): help with meals, transportation, Medicare questions, housing, caregiver support, and the five senior centers across Buford, Centerville, Lawrenceville, Norcross & the main center on Swanson Dr. Pass it to a parent, a neighbor, anyone who could use a hand. → Full details here

Plan ahead: The World Cup runs all summer — Gwinnett's got watch parties on rotation. Suwanee on 6/27 is the family-friendly headliner.

🌇 Free golden-hour tip: McDaniel Farm gates close at sunset — show up about an hour before for the best light and the emptiest trail.

😄 Local truth: If you stand still in downtown Sugar Hill long enough, somebody will ask if you're filming a movie. (Just me? Okay.)

🙏 Until Next Time

This week, one quiet appointment turned into a reminder I needed: we live somewhere genuinely beautiful, full of people building good things. Don't let the everyday-ness of it make you miss it. Go take the walk. Try the new spot. Wave a flag at the watch party. Then tell me about it.

One more thing before you go 👇 — I'm putting more of these moments on video. If you want to actually see the Sugar Hill that stopped me this week (and everything else I'm filming around the county), subscribe to our YouTube channel — it's where Gwinnett Best is growing next, and I'd love to have you along for it.

God puts us in communities on purpose. Gwinnett is ours. Make the most of it this week. — Gus
