This Week
in Gwinnett.

Hey neighbor — When was the last time you walked into a room where you didn't know a single person?

Last week I did it on purpose. I drove up to Durham, North Carolina, for three days with people who build local newsletters all over the country. Small towns, big cities, suburbs a lot like ours. Different zip codes, same mission: help neighbors find each other.

I filled a notebook. But the moment I keep coming back to wasn't a session. It was dinner.

The conference had its own dinner club, the same idea as ours. A table of people who didn't know each other, good food, and real conversation. For once I wasn't the guy who set the table. I was the stranger pulling up a chair.

And here's what I learned from the other side: the hardest part of the whole night is the ten seconds before you sit down. After that, it's just people. People with stories, and kids, and businesses, and the same hopes you have.

So I came home with three big takeaways for GwinnettBest. I'll share more of them over the next few weeks, because a lot of them are about you and how we can build this thing together.

But the first one is simple: keep setting the table. Which brings me to tonight's deadline...

GwinnettBest Dinner Club · Tomorrow, Wednesday, October 21 · 6:30 PM · Downtown Suwanee

Here's how it works:

  • You take a quick personality quiz and get matched with five neighbors.

  • The restaurant gets revealed tomorrow morning. All you know right now is that it's in Downtown Suwanee.

  • Every table heads to a secret after-party after dessert, so you meet even more people.

I know it's a Wednesday. I know you're tired. I know you don't know anybody. I didn't either last week, and it was one of the best nights of my trip.

Six seats per table. A few hours left.

GUS' PICK OF THE WEEK

One place this week that deserves more love…

The Grove Taqueria, Downtown Snellville

📍 2270 Oak Rd SW, Snellville (in The Grove) · Details & updates

Here's a date night that sizzles. Literally.

The Grove Taqueria sits right in The Grove at Towne Center, the new downtown Snellville built from scratch so neighbors would have a place to gather. It's a full Mexican restaurant and bar in its own building, run by the team behind Hacienda Bar & Grill. If you haven't been to downtown Snellville since The Grove opened, this is your excuse.

What to order: split the Molcajete Verde. It's grilled steak, chicken, shrimp, cactus, and onions under melted cheese in a roasted green salsa, and it comes out still bubbling in a stone molcajete. Want something different? Try the James Special, served in a lava rock bowl from Mexico. Then share the churros.

Why it's great for date night: dinner, then a slow walk around the green under the lights. It's the closest thing Snellville has to a town square night out. And since this lands on a Tuesday, yes, they do Taco Tuesday.

BEFORE YOU GO

One more thing from Durham.

On the drive home, I kept thinking about how many people out there are building something just like this in their own towns. Hundreds of them. And every single one of them said some version of the same thing: "I just want my neighbors to know each other and know what’s happening around them."

So this week, encourage somebody. Pull up a chair. Or save one for a stranger.
