I’ve been thinking about something since last week.
I took my son to lunch at a South African–Portuguese chicken spot. Then I stumbled on a Yemeni coffeehouse in Duluth that’s open past midnight. And then I saw Peachtree Corners is throwing its first-ever International & Cultural Festival this Saturday.
Three totally different things… same little “wait a second” thought every time:
We don’t have to go anywhere. The world already moved here.
People drive to Atlanta for “culture.” Meanwhile we’ve got Korean coffee on Berkeley Lake Road, Adeni chai on Peachtree Industrial, and a festival on the Town Green with flags from countries most of us couldn’t point to on a map.
So yep — that’s the plan this week.

The city and the WOW Afro Foundation are turning the Town Green into a global village for one day — international performers, food from a dozen-plus cultures, an artisan market, and family activities running from lunch until the lights come on.
Why this one matters: Gwinnett is one of the most diverse counties in the entire Southeast, and somehow we've never had a festival that actually says so out loud. This is the first year. First years are the ones you want to be able to say you were at.
🚒 Cookout With Council — Norcross opens the doors to the new Public Safety Building

Norcross just finished a $26.9 million public safety building, and before the official ribbon-cutting on September 2, they're throwing a neighborhood cookout so residents can actually walk through it.
Why this is worth your Saturday morning: after September 8, getting inside requires an ID-verified background check. This is a genuine now-or-not-for-a-long-time window to see where your tax dollars went and meet the council while you're at it.

🎬 Movies in the Park: THE CROODS

Why this is great for families: it's a full Friday night out that costs you exactly zero dollars and ends before anybody melts down. The Croods is also a rare pick that works for a 4-year-old and a 10-year-old at the same time.

Duluth's weekly alley party runs every Thursday through August 27, so there are only two of these left in 2026.

Gonggan is a Korean specialty coffee brand with locations in New York and Los Angeles — and this is their first Atlanta-area store. The menu spotlights South Korean roasters, which you basically cannot find anywhere else in metro Atlanta.
Get the ube blackberry croffle (croissant-waffle, and yes it's the signature for a reason), the earl grey blueberry toast, or the matcha.
Why this is great for: a quick, beautiful stop rather than a four-hour work session — the space is minimal and photo-ready, so it's a solid "let's go somewhere new for 45 minutes" move.

Last week I grabbed lunch with my son at Nando’s.
If you haven’t been: it’s flame‑grilled chicken + PERi‑PERi sauce + “why did we not come here sooner?” energy.
One thing I need you to promise me:
Do. Not. Skip. The sauce.
Plain chicken is fine. Plain chicken at Nando’s is a missed opportunity. Pick a heat level and commit like an adult.
But that’s not why this is here.
That lunch took maybe 40 minutes… and I’ve thought about it like 11 times since.
No big plan. No “making memories” agenda. Just us sitting there, eating, and him talking while I did the rarest thing on earth: shut up and listened.
I keep chasing the big stuff — trips, events, the next thing — and then a random weekday lunch quietly ends up being the best part of the week.
So if you’ve got a kid: take one of them to lunch this week. Just one. No siblings. No phone. No reason.
