Tonight's the first-ever GwinnettBest Dinner Club. Six neighbors per table, downtown Lawrenceville. I've been picturing this for weeks, and now it's actually happening and I keep checking my phone like a kid before a first day of school.

Here's the thing about a first anything — you don't know if it's going to feel awkward or magic until you're sitting there. I'm betting on magic. I think strangers becoming neighbors over a good meal is exactly the kind of thing we need more of, and tonight we find out if I'm right.

Alcove sits right on a small lake, with a patio that makes you forget you're on Stone Mountain Highway. They've been an independent neighborhood spot since 2002, pulling espresso and pour-overs alongside sandwiches, salads, and pastries.

What to order: the Americano — it's the one regulars keep bringing up in reviews.
