This Week
in Gwinnett.

Hey neighbor — every week when I plan what I am going to send, I always remind myself: "what would I want someone to invite me to or wish they would have told me about?"
And that hit me. Because that's actually what this newsletter is. It's me telling you what I'd tell my kids, my wife, my neighbors at the gas station — here's what's good in Gwinnett this week, here's where you should go, here's why it matters.
This week's a good one. Chalk artists taking over downtown Duluth, DJs spinning on the Lawrenceville Square, a free comic con worth wearing a cape to, and a couple of spots I've been meaning to tell you about for weeks.
Let's get into it. ↓

This Coming Week
Seven things worth showing up for.

April 28 – May 1, 2026
1. 🎨 🌅 Duluth Derby Day & Chalk Art Festival
Friday, May 1 (kickoff 2:00 PM) → Saturday, May 2 | Downtown Duluth | FREE
This one is unreal in person. Picture 10+ chalk artists transforming the downtown pavement into full-scale masterpieces while you walk around eating, shopping, and pretending you're at a tiny European street festival. Friday afternoon is the kickoff — go grab dinner downtown after work, watch the artists set up, then come back Saturday morning to see the finished pieces. It's the most underrated weekend tradition in Gwinnett.
🏷️ Great for: Family Outings | Date Night | Free / Under $20
2. 🎧 🍸 Beats on the Streets — Season Kickoff
Thursday, April 30 | 6:00–10:00 PM | Downtown Lawrenceville Square | FREE
This is the Thursday night to be downtown. Beats on the Streets kicks off 12 weeks of live DJ sets right on the square — opening night features DJ Cam Christian, restaurant specials at every patio spot, and that perfect spring-night energy where you end up dancing in the street even if you swore you wouldn't. Bring the spouse, bring your friends, grab a drink, stay later than you meant to.
🏷️ Great for: Date Night | 21+ Night Out | Free / Under $20
3. 🦸 🌅 DTL CON-Quest — Opening Night
Friday, May 1 | 6:00–10:00 PM | Lawrenceville Arts Center & Downtown | FREE
If you have kids who love comics, costumes, gaming, or anything pop-culture — clear the calendar. DTL CON-Quest (formerly Free Comic Book Day) is in its 10th year with Galactic Quest and has grown into a full-on convention. Friday is the kickoff with cosplay, free comic books scattered around downtown for the #DTLcomicquest scavenger hunt, and a vibe you have to see to understand. Saturday goes 10 AM–6 PM if you can't make Friday.
🏷️ Great for: Family Outings | Kids | Free / Under $20
4. 🏎️ 🙌 Atlanta Motoring Festival & Concours d'Elegance
Friday, May 1 | 9:00 AM onward | Lanier Islands Resort, Buford
Vintage cars, exotics, and showpieces lined up along Lake Lanier with that lakeside Friday energy. Even if you don't know a Bugatti from a Buick, the people-watching alone is worth the drive. Friday is preview/setup day with the full Concours running through Saturday — go early Friday for fewer crowds and better photos.
🏷️ Great for: Date Night | Seniors | Family Outings
5. 🎵 🍸 Live Music Wednesday at B&W Burgers
Wednesday, April 29 | 7:00–11:00 PM | Norcross
Midweek pick-me-up. B&W has quietly become one of the better mid-week music spots in Norcross — burgers, beer, and live tunes on a Wednesday night when nothing else is happening. Easy date night, easy hang with friends.
🏷️ Great for: Date Night | 21+ Night Out
6. 🏛️ 🌅 Norcross Then & Now Exhibit
Tuesday–Friday | 9:00 AM–5:00 PM | Welcome Center & History Museum, Norcross | FREE
If you've ever wandered Historic Norcross and wondered "what was this place 100 years ago?" — this exhibit answers exactly that. Vintage photos, stories, and a real sense of how this corner of Gwinnett came to be. Drop in for 20 minutes on a lunch break or take the kids on a slower morning. Free.
🏷️ Great for: Family Outings | Seniors | Free / Under $20
7. 🌳 🌅 Special Event at Lenora Park
Tuesday, April 28 | 10:00 AM–12:00 PM | 4515 Lenora Church Road, Snellville
A mid-morning community program at one of Gwinnett's best-kept park gems. Perfect for stay-at-home parents, retirees, or anyone with a flexible Tuesday morning who wants to get out of the house and meet a neighbor.
🏷️ Great for: Seniors | Family Outings | Free / Under $20
GUS' PICK OF THE WEEK
One place this week that deserves more love…
🍜 Tani Thai — Downtown Buford

15 East Main St, Buford, GA 30518
If you want a date night that actually feels like a date night — without the "how much did we just spend?" moment when the check comes — Tani Thai is the move. Hidden in Downtown Buford on East Main, this little Thai spot punches way above its weight class. The room is warm and intentional, the service feels personal, and the food is the kind of fresh-made, full-flavor Thai that ruins the takeout version for you forever.
My favorite shrimp fried rice in Gwinnett…so far!
Order the Pad See Ew, share a curry, get the spring rolls to start, and grab a Thai iced tea even if you weren't planning on dessert. The whole thing rings up reasonable, and you walk out feeling like you actually went somewhere. After dinner, walk the downtown Buford strip — it's the perfect Friday night formula.
Tip: Reservations recommended for Friday–Saturday. They're closed Sundays, so plan accordingly.
Hours: Mon–Thu 11:30 AM – 2:30 PM & 5–9 PM | Fri–Sat 11:30 AM – 2:30 PM & 5–10 PM | Closed Sunday

From the county.
Growing in all the right ways
Lawrenceville named one of Georgia's premier event cities for 2026
Between Beats on the Streets, DTL CON-Quest, the upcoming Boogie events, and BOO Fest in the fall, the city has officially become the destination calendar in metro Atlanta. We've been quietly proud of this for years. Now everyone else is catching on.
Brightside Cafe in Buford keeps quietly doing what it does
Employing adults with special abilities and turning ordinary coffee runs into community moments. If you missed last week's spotlight, swing by 554 W Main and meet the team. They'll remember your name the next time you walk in.
COFFEE SPOTLIGHT
Two Gwinnett shops worth the drive this week — both real, both excellent, one of them is newly featured here.
📍 DULUTH
☕ Cafe Blue Roastery
2005 Boggs Rd, Suite 100, Duluth, GA 30096 | (678) 226-9985
Here's something most Gwinnett folks have no idea exists in our backyard — a roastery serving 100% Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee, roasted right on site. Jamaica Blue Mountain is one of the rarest, most expensive coffees on the planet. And it's pulled fresh in Duluth. The space itself is sleek and modern, the staff knows the bean inside-out, and one cup tells you exactly why this place has a quiet cult following.
Best move: Order a single-origin pour-over of the Blue Mountain. Sit. Drink it slowly. You'll understand.
Hours: Mon–Sat 7 AM – 7 PM (call ahead to confirm — hours vary seasonally)
📍 L’VILLE
☕ Reyna's Espresso & Sweets
137 W Crogan St, Lawrenceville, GA 30046 | (470) 294-1631
A husband-and-wife team roasting their own beans in-house, right in the heart of downtown Lawrenceville. Reyna's is small, intentional, and the kind of place where the barista actually wants to talk about the beans. House-roasted espresso, rotating drip, and a little case of sweets that pairs perfectly with whatever you order. Open until 8 PM most nights — which makes it the rare Gwinnett shop that doubles as both a morning ritual and an evening hangout.
Best move: Pop in after Beats on the Streets Thursday night for a late espresso. It's a 60-second walk from the square.
Hours: Mon–Fri 8 AM – 8 PM | Sat 9 AM – 8 PM | Sun 9 AM – 4 PM
The "text this to your spouse" section.
WORTH KNOWING THIS WEEK
☕ Brightside Cafe in Buford is open Sat 8 AM–2 PM if you missed last week's spotlight — every drink supports adults with special abilities.
🎤 Slow Pour Brewing's Friday Karaoke (5/1) — easiest free Friday night in town. Check their calendar before you go.
🛒 Suwanee Farmers Market opens Saturday, May 9 — set the calendar reminder now. Best Saturday morning ritual in the county.
🚗 Lawrenceville construction note: Downtown traffic patterns shift slightly Friday for DTL CON-Quest setup. Park behind the courthouse if Clayton St is busy.

BEFORE YOU GO
Go to one of these things this week. Take someone you love. Put the phone down for an hour. Let yourself remember that this county isn't just where you sleep — it's where your weeks happen.
The chalk on the pavement washes away. The DJ stops playing at 10. The cosplay gets folded back into the closet.
But the Wednesday night burger, the Thursday night street dance, the Friday afternoon walk through downtown Duluth with someone you love — that's what stays.
Gwinnett is better because you're in it. See you out there.
